With a team of engineers, I have been working on the next level of circularity in cycling. Roetz-Bikes has a history of producing new bikes based on discarded frames, and has a track record in remanufacturing bikes of 3rd party (e-)bike fleets. From all that experience, we have developed an e-bike from scratch that’s truly optimized for circularity. Roetz Life is currently in production, by Roetz-Bikes in Amsterdam-Noord. I worked closely with their product developers on making the transition from a mostly fixed gear focused brand to a more “adventure bikes” focused brand. I loved working on their steel multi-purpose, go-anywhere-fast bikes. Control and focus are essential ingredients for experiencing flow. With this in mind, I’ve developed a minimalistic fender that’s only there when it’s needed. The rest of the time, it can be folded up and stored in the back pocket of a cycling jersey. It’s like technical outdoor clothing for your bike. I designed this, produced it in Amsterdam, and sold it through a world wide distribution network under my own brand Wit Industries. The polypropylene dye cut design made it possible to mass produce locally with low tooling cost, and being able to custom print. Even in full color. Since 2017, befriended competitor&nbsp;Ass-Savers sells it under license. 2026 marks its 15th year in production. Designed in house at Koga, with Daniel Loot. The base of the bike is one of the successful bike packing frames made by Koga, which are used in the most remote parts of the earth and in the harshest conditions. The idea was that a good bike packing frame would make a nice, fun-to-ride, bomb proof commuter bike, which would turn any commute into an activity that makes the destination secondary. The position is very practical for touring/trekking bicycles, which often have a handlebar bag, which would normally cover the headlight. This research consisted of qualitative research among existing Koga bike owners from whom I tried to get a grip on how they saw their relationship/interaction with their bike.&nbsp; What became clear was that people buy a Koga because in essence, they want to enjoy cycling for the sake of cycling. They’re not buying a work horse for getting from A-to-B. Although simple, for the brand these were important realisations. From the brand essence and a future vision, I designed a concept bike around this question: Could we move to a market where it’s not so obvious that people ride their bike purely for the pleasure of riding, and apply our principles there?&nbsp; The answer was: a commuter bike that gets you involved in cycling because it facilitates experiencing a Flow state.
